What does it mean to have meaning?
Humans are purpose-driven, meaning-making creatures. As Viktor Frankl famously said, “If a person has a why, they can endure any how.”
If you know that your life has meaning, then you will be motivated to get out of bed in the morning.
But if you can’t find meaning in your work, relationships, or recreation, you will start distracting yourself with meaningless pleasure. (Ever find yourself doomscrolling?)
We must have meaning to thrive.
But what exactly does it mean to have a Meaning FULL Life?
What does it mean to have meaning?
The easiest way I can describe it is that we must believe that we are part of a coherent story.
There must be an author leading us to overcome challenges so that we can solve a specific problem or complete the task he has given us.
That is the dramatic claim that the Scriptures make.
God is your author.
Jesus is your rescuer.
Through him, you overcome all things.
And the Holy Spirit is your guide.
The reason you might feel blah in this moment is that you’ve forgotten the Author and you have lost connection with the plot.
One simple step that you can take right now is view your day in light of the Last Day.
Consider what you can do in this moment, even and especially something in secret, in Jesus’ name.
What prayer, what act of love, what service might you offer so that on the Last Day, the Author might say, “Well done!”
Then slowly, as you begin to stack these little meaningful moments together, you will begin to hear the Author’s voice again.
You will begin to connect with the plot once again.
And just like that, another page is written in your narrative.
